Bosnia is small enough to see a lot in a week, and green enough to feel a world away from the Gulf summer. Here are seven places our guests return to again and again.
1. Sarajevo
The capital is where most trips begin. Ottoman bazaars, coffee that takes its time, and mountains on every horizon. Base yourself near Baščaršija and walk.
2. Mostar
The famous Old Bridge, turquoise river, and old town lanes. Best in the early morning before the day-trippers arrive.
3. Jahorina & Bjelašnica
Cool mountain air an hour from Sarajevo. Green meadows in summer, snow in winter — perfect for families escaping the heat.
4. Kravice Waterfalls
A wide curtain of falls near Mostar, ringed by places to swim and sit in the shade. Go on a weekday.
5. Blagaj
A dervish house built into a cliff where the Buna river bursts out of the rock. Quiet, cool, and unforgettable.
6. Una National Park
Emerald rivers and waterfalls in the northwest — the wildest, greenest corner of the country.
7. Trebinje
Sunny, walkable, and close to the Adriatic. A gentle place to end a trip.
Tip: distances are short but roads are mountain roads. A comfortable car — or a private driver — makes all the difference.
